International Women's Day at Pertemps Professional Recruitment

For over a century, International Women’s Day has been celebrated on 8 March. This year’s theme, #EachforEqual challenges stereotypes, fights prejudice and celebrates the social, economic, cultural achievements of women.

Andrew Anastasiou, Managing Director at Pertemps Professional Recruitment (PPR) says “of course we recognise the importance of women in the workplace. I’m delighted that they are so well represented at PPR, especially within our senior leadership team.”

#EachforEqual reflects a commitment to gender equality and an inclusive and effective society. This is as valid in the workplace as anywhere else. Jackie Whateley, Regional Director, says “it’s always been absolutely key for me that we have great women in our business. We form half of the population and should form half of a business.” At the same time, it really is about equality – “gender isn’t a focus in our workplace. We’re fortunate to have a great balance of individuals all playing a part in making PPR a great place to work”.

For Rachel Hand, Director of Hourglass Education, it’s important to have a range of role models at all levels of the organisation. She says “just as I’m committed to gender equality at home – really important in a household of boys – I try to model that behaviour at work too. I think feminism is about having the inner strength to do my own thing, to have choices and behave in a way that encourages everyone to be the best version of themselves”.

Data shows that numbers of men and women entering the workforce are balanced, but overall women find it more challenging to reach the top. Jackie says “there are archaic viewpoints still around, but gender should not be a consideration in employment anymore. Our challenge is to ensure our organisation fits the modern workforce. Ideally we should offer it all – career, parenthood and work-life balance”. For anyone starting out at PPR, Jackie would offer this advice: “be yourself and ask as many questions as you need to. Remember, you were employed on merit, so be confident in your expertise”.
